Andrew and Cindy Morgan Perform Original Song for Former President and First Lady

Multi-Dove Award nominated singer-songwriter Andrew Greer and multi-Dove Award winning singer-songwriter Cindy Morgan recently sang for former President and First Lady of the United States, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, in a special event honoring Mrs. Carter’s 95th birthday during the first annual “Butterfly Daze” Weekend in Plains, Georgia. From Andrew’s Facebook post about the song and the weekend:

Cindy said the evening was “magical.” And indeed, it was.

Cindy Morgan and I were invited to write a song in honor of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter’s 95th birthday. And then to sing it during the dedication of a butterfly tree sculpture (designed by renowned multi-medium artist Peter Hazel in honor of this monumental birthday) located beside Rosalynn’s childhood home inside the little dusty town that has now become a second home to me … Plains, Georgia.

The song is called “Butterfly, Fly (Rosalynn’s Song).” After singing the song for the entire gathering, our good friend and President Carter and Mrs. Carter’s niece, Kim, ushered us to their table to give the First Lady a personal birthday greeting. I kept my guitar on me and as we began talking to Mrs. Carter I asked her if she would like us to sing a bit of the song acoustic, just for her and President Carter, so they could hear it better.

She said, “Yes.”

As we looked into the face of a woman dubbed the “Steel Magnolia” for her gentle strength in the White House, now tender with age in her Deep South hometown, we leaned in and sang the song’s chorus once more, just for her … “Fly, fly, fly, Butterfly, fly / Fly, fly, fly, Rosalynn, fly.” And she began to cry. And smile. And melt our hearts as we accompanied, for that moment, the spirit of, yes, a legend in our world’s history, but moreso a dear human being living out her last days with the same compassionate grace that has marked her entire life, and with which she has marked the lives of others forever.

Cindy said it best, “It was magical.” Indeed, it was.
